Edo period (19th century),  Japan Rectangular and the cover with canted edges and designed on the exterior with a moonlit scene of autumn grasses rendered in two shades of gold takamakie and hiramakie, gold and silver foil and hirame on glossy brown ground sprinkled with muranashiji, the full moon inlaid in silver, the design continuing onto the sides of the box, the underside of the cover with a scene of plovers beneath a craggy pine and a red, setting sun, in gold, black and red togidashi, gold hiramakie, takamakie and hirame, the interior fitted with a removable inner tray designed in hirame and gold and black togidashi clouds and fitted with a rectangular inkstone lacquered on the edges and exterior in funadame and hirame on a black ground, and a silver water dropper cast as a plum blossom set into a three-tiered reservoir 8 7/8 x 7 3/4 x 1 1/2in (22.5 x 19.7 x 3.8cm).  Text and images via Bonhams
